More than one thousand years have passed since die young, warrior-Hke Magyars left Asia and setded along the Danube under Prince Arpad. Other extraordinary leaders helped to forge their history, like Stephen 1, the saint and founder of the Hungarian state, and its first king, Matthias Corvinus, who led the heroic resistance against the Turks and ruled Hungary during its period of greatest splendor. Despite large tracts of the country being ruled by the Ottomans from 1440 to 1699, and their dominion being followed by that of the Hapsbin gs, the desire for independence was never exdnguished. Politicians like Lajos Kossuth and poets like Sandor Petofi enflamed the nineteenth century with the ardor of their patriotic feelings. Paying a high price, Hungary won its independence but, at the end of the Second World War, it entered the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union for nearly half a century, only returning to democracy in 1990. Its eventful history can be read in Budapest, one of the liveliest and most interesting cities in Europe, which lies on the Danube and boasts ardstic and architectural remains dadng back to the Roman epoeh, but also in smaller ancient cities, such as Estergom, Gyor, Eger and Sopron, and in the country's superb Benedicdne abbeys like Pannonhalma.
Hungary is further enriched by its deeply ingrained folklore and superb countryside: the pretty Bend of the Danube, the endl^ expanses of the puszin, and the tranquility of Lake Balaton, Hungary's inland sea^ framed by vincz yards. Vissza
