Hungary's first national park was established in 1973. In the frame of Action Pro Natura, reputed international scientists raised their voices to save the natural heritage of the Hortobágy. The greatest result of Hungarian nature conservation is that nine more national parks could be created during the thirty years since then, the last being the Őrség National Park in 2002.
This album offers a selection of the natural assets of Hungary's ten national parks, in other words, the ten flagships of Hungarian nature conservation. The photos document how wildlife, the landscape-forming activities of Man and the ancient forces that shape the Earth's surface have created and still change our environment.

Dr. Zsolt Kalotas has degrees in agriculture and game management. He wrote his thesis in ornithology. Head of the Ornithological Institute of the Authority for Nature Conservation, Ministry of Environment from 1989 to 2004, he became deputy head of department of the National Environmental and Water Management Authority in 2004. With his nature photographer friends, he established the Association of Hungarian Nature Photographers, naturArt in 1989, and presided it for fifteen years, with the combined goals of nature consen/ation and the enhancement of nature photographing to artistic standards.
He published more than three thousand nature photos in Hungary as well as abroad, and gained numerous awards. His greatest successes include winning the title 'Nature Photographer of the Year' in
2001, and becoming the first Hungarian nature photographer to publish works in the National Geographic magazine in
2002.
in recognition of his outstanding achievements in nature consen/ation and nature photography, he received Pro Natura award in 2004. October 10.
