This book demystifies and even clarifies
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) by putting
it in context of its historical development in the
field of communications. The author points out
that while the much heralded narrowband Integrated
Services Digital Network (ISDN) provides for integration
between voice and data transmission, it still cannot be
easily or economically adapted for broadband services,
such as video. Much hope, therefore, rests on ATM as the
optimal solution for public and private networks to
implement the Integrated Broadband Communications
Network (IBCN) - the broadband network of the future.
Historically, a different specialized network type was
developed to satisfy the unique requirements of each
information service. The public telephone network, for
example, was designed to satisfy voice services, while the
Community Antenna Television (CATV) for sending
television signals. ATM, however, was designed to satisfy
future needs, some of which have... Tovább

Community Antenna Television (CATV) for sending
television signals. ATM, however, was designed to satisfy
future needs, some of which have not even been identified.
Nevertheless, the concept for single broadband network
is an attractive one, though expensive. ATM was motivated
by many factors, including the convergence of the
computing and communications industries. This book also
points out the strengths and weaknesses of some of the
competing technologies which are bei ng considered.
i.j. "Duffy" hlnes was the Sales and Marketing Manager for Bell
Atlantic, where he was involved with the market! ng and planning of
ATM. Duffy is currently the Principal Consultant with Hines Associates,
Eagleville, PA, a consulting firm which has done major works in voice,
data, and video communications for the Federal Government, major
universities, as well as Fortune 500 companies. Vissza
