States of spiritual exaltation in which the believer feels himself 'possessed' by the deity and raised to a new pláne of being are found in almost all known religions. Ecstatic Religion offers a sociological approach to this type of experience. An important distinction is made between central possession cults, which reinforce official morality and established power, and marginal cults, which are a form of indirect protest on the part of the downtrodden - particularly women. I. M. Lewis is the Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics.
