The "unspoilt" side, shielded from industry and from tourist commercialization, has been captured here quite deliberately: old farming land where the atmosphere can still be sensed, town centres whose original appearance is still intact, where history still permeates every wall, customs kept up in their original form and not paraded for advertising purposes. A great romantic, this man of letters can no more conceal his love for his country than he can reconcile himself indiscriminately with everything that happens there. With a critical and occasionally malicious pen he points out the shadows cast by these beautiful pictures and then succumbs again rapturously to reflections on the landscape.
