This autobiographical work consists of actual incidents that Isaac Bashevis Singer remembers from his childhood in Warsaw, where his father was a rabbi in a poor quarter of the city. Through their rooms at No. 10 Krochmalna Street passed a variety of types who came to see the elder Singer for rulings on points of Jewish law, for adjudication of their disputes, and for personal advice and comfort. Fiom his earliest boyhood days, the narrator saw and heard things in his father's house that astonished, amused, perplexed, and impressed him. These things he never forgot, and they are the fabric of this memorable book.

The central figure is the father, whose goodness and nobility of character gradually emerge from the pages in grand dimensions. In one sense, the book is an act of homage to his memory. It is also a picture of a world that could only have existed in the years before the deluge of World War I. The incidents Singer recounts have all the comic-tragic qualities of his fiction.
In My Father's Court belongs with Isaac Bashevis Singer's finest work. It helps our understanding of all his books, providing as it does the background from which he derived his justly famous works of fiction.
"The sort of book . . . only a writer at the height of his powers, firmly in command of his created world, his mind charged with vivid memories, can somehow shake effortlessly out of his sleeve. . . . Often close to the Biblical directness of feeling that Tolstoy prescribed for the 'universal art of the future.' "
