IN THE BEAUTY OF THE LILIES . Taking its title from the "Battle-Hymn of the Repűblic " IN THE BEAUTY OF THE LILIES traces four generations of one family's profound journey through the spiritual landscape of twentie th- century America. It begins in 1910, when Clarence Wilmot, a Presbyterián clergyman in Paterson, New Jersey, loses his faith at the precise moment actress Mary Pickford faints on the set of D. W. Griffith's A Caű to Árms. This reaiization and its aftermath forever affect the fiiture of the Wilmot family. Suddenly without a job, Clarence ends up selling encyelopedias door-to-door while becoming increasingly fascinated with the exciting new médium of "moving pictures." His cautious and troubled son Teddy--faithless himself-marries a good Methodist girl. Together théy have a da-ughter, Esther, whose prayers arc always answered.
