MALCOLM HASLAM
In the Nouveau Style examines and celebrates the diversity and brilliance of Art Nouveau, from its origins, through its flowering at the turn of the century to its continued transformations in recent decades. It is the first book ever to trace the progress through the whole century of a style popularly supposed to be limited to the years of the Belle Epoque.
Malcolm Haslam traces the roots of Art Nouveau back to a rebellion against the Classical and Gothic revivals of the Victorians, and relates its first appearance in Symbolism and Aestheticism to a spirit of subversion in the arts - a questioning of the settled order. Malcolm Haslam traces the roots of Art Nouveau back to a rebellion against the Classical and Gothic revivals of the Victorians, and relates its first appearance in Symbolism and Aestheticism to a spirit of subversion in the arts - a questioning of the settled order. This questioning was certainly present in the high style of Art Nouveau, when the ideals of rebellion against 'official' design were inspired by a vocabulary drawn from natural forms. It was present even in the more geometrical and strictly ordered manifestations of the style - such as the work of the Glasgow School.
In the Nouveau Style then traces the survival of Art Nouveau characteristics through the years when Art Deco and Modernism took precedence. The post-war years saw a major and full-blown revival: the sweeping, sinuous lines and taste for exotic colour returned as the style of Sixties culture and the alternative society, and has retained its popularity right up to today. The book thus concludes on the high note of a style in full renaissance.
