The vast extent of the subcontinent makes India a country of tremendous diversity - in her landscapes, her peoples, and in the richness of the cultural heritage with which centuries of devout Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism have endowed her.
India's landscapes fall into three broad geographical regions - the spectacular, crescent-shaped mountain wall of the Himalayas; the fertile Indo-Gangetic Plain, formed by the basins of India's three great rivers, the sacred Ganges, the Indus, and the Brahmaputra; and the peninsula or Deccan Plateau, separated from the plains by further mountain ranges. Each of these land areas possesses its own distinctive power and beauty.
The peoples of India form a complex mosaic of race, language and religion across the subcontinent.
