INTERPRETATIONS OF AMERICAN HISTORY
Patterns and Perspectives Volume II: Since 1877 SIXTH EDITION Edited by Gerald N. Grob and George Athan Billias
Now in its sixth edition, this provocative, uniquely interpretive approach to the study of American history has once again been thoroughly revised and updated. Reflecting the most recent significant historical scholarship and thought, almost half of the contributors are new to this latest edition. The new voices include James Livingston on the American businessman, Gerda Lemer, Ellen G. DuBois, and Vicki L. Ruiz on women in history, Nathan I. Huggins on black history, John A. Garraty on the New Deal, Jonathan G. Utley on World War II, John Lewis Gaddis on the Gold War, Stanley I. Kutler on the National Security State, and Paul Kennedy and Kevin P. Phillips on the 1980s.
From the Reconstructiori Era through the eighties, ten lively chapters provide students with a spectrurn of divergent historical viewpoints on the main social, political, and economic trends that have shaped America's last Century and a half. Grob and Billias begin each chapter with a lucid introductory essay that examines how scholars have dealt with the changing meanings and importance of particular historical periods and the distinctive challenges these shifts present. Two selections follow this introduction offering contrasting perspectives that compel students to take sides, evaluate the arguments, and reach their own conclusions.
Acknowledging the dynamic and malleable quality of our national historical experience, the editors reveal how succeeding generations of Americans continually rewrite the story of the past in light of the evolving ideas, attitudes, and assumptions of the present. In their general introductions, Grob and BiUias explore the trends and transformations in historical scholarship over more than a century and their significance for the discipline of history as a whole. They show how the debates about our history serve to keep it vital, challenging, and truly contemporary.
Gerald N. Grob is Sigerist Professor of the History of Medicine at Rutgers University George Athan Billias is Emeritus Hyatt Professor of History at Clark University.
