Dietmar H. Wittmann is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Previously, he was Privat-Dozent at the Hamburg University Medical School with a clinical appointment to the Department of Surgery of the General Hospitál Hamburg-Altona, Germany. A founding member and first secretary of the Surgical Infection Society-Europe, Dr. Wittmann's research focuses on surgical infections, pharmacokinetics, peptic ulcer surgery, biliary tract surgery, gastrointestinal hormones, bone infections, risk-factor analysis, organ-failure syndromes, surgical immunology, and infection control. Dr. Wittmann received the M.D. degree (1969) from the Hamburg University Medical School and Ph.D. degree (1971) in toxicology from the University of Düsseldorf, Germany.
