The first edition of this book has long been considered one of the classical introductions to an important area in the fields of information theory and discrete mathematics—an area that continues to grow in importance with the growth of applications of mathematics in computer science and in industry.
After a brief review of the prerequisite mathematics, the book is divided into two parts. The first five chapters provide a rigorous mathematical introduction to coding theory. The remaining five chapters introduce the reader to various special topics such as arithmetic codes. These can serve as a text for a second semester course on coding theory, as supplementary reading, or as an introduction to the technical literature.
Exercises with complete solutions are provided.
