Political Leaders of the Twentieth Century
is a new series of Pelican books. These political biographies will analyse in depth the real men lurking behind the personality cults of great contemporary statesmen. Their purpose is to explain how such political leaders of our times as Mao Tse-tung and Macmillan, de Gaulle and Stalin, Verwoerd and Fidel Castro formed their political outlooks, to examine how they gained power and how they held and exercised it, and to suggest what each of them has come to epitomize in the eyes of his own nation and of the world at large.

During his life Stalin engendered the extremes of hatred and love: it was impossible to ignore him. Greater, at his best, than Peter the Great; more brutal, at his worst, than Ivan the Terrible, the subject of this famous biography is himself sufficient explanation of the storm of controversy it aroused on publication. Some saw it as the rose-tinted apology of a former Cdmmunist, some as the bitter denunciation of a writer who had never subscribed to the Stalin cult. Deutscher's biography is, in reality, an unbiased appraisal of a revolutionary despot, and this Pelican edition contains a wholly new chapter covering Stalin's last years.
