The book Difficult Questions, a collaborative project of the Forum for Dialogue Among Nations Foundation and the American Jewish Committee, is the first endeavor in Polish publishing to build bridges of understanding between Poles and Jews in a way that takes equal account of history, politics, and daily life. The history that is learned in school by young American and Israeli Jews is an entirely different version from that which young Poles are taught. The chasm between the two narratives about the past is impossible to bridge without each side understanding the perspectives and concerns of the other.
The Difficult Questions project began with an analysis of more than a thousand questionnaires gathered in Poland, the United States, Israel, Canada, and Australia. In them, young Poles and Jews exchanged the questions that seemed to them most pressing, difficult, and sensitive regarding the past, present, and future. A group of sociologists assembled by the Forum for Dialogue Among Nations, together with the editors of this book, compiled a list of the fifty most important and representative questions posed by these young people. They were answered by some of the most distinguished experts in the areas of history, sociology, Polish-Jewish relations, and religion. From the most naive to the most delicate and complex, the questions received responses that are sure to satisfy the curiosity of a wide range of readers. We are confident that Difficult Questions will become required reading for all seeking to broaden their knowledge of Polish-Jewish relations.
