In this book, MacCulloch widens the scope of previous books with a comparative study of the mythology and religious beliefs of the Celts and the early Scandinavians, many of whom, as Vikings and Norsemen, raided our shores and held sway in parts of Britain for several centuries. The parts of the book concerned with Scandinavian religion will also serve as an introduction to the Old Norse texts.
The Scandinavians were members of the Teutonic or Germanic peoples. The religion of the Scandinavians was like that of the Germanic tribes, and their chief deities and religious practices were the same over the whole Teutonic area. They only counted as gods those whom they could see or by whom they were openly aided - the sun, the fire-god and the moon. They had no Druids to regulate worship and no interest in sacrifices.
Scandinavian sources are fairly abundant - the poetry and prose of the Eddas. Their deities ride on in our consciousness whenever Wagner operas are performed.

This book describes the complexities of Celtic and Scandinavian religious belief with pellucid clarity.
J. A. MacCulloch was a scholar and author of several books, including The Misty Isle of Skye, The Childhood of Fiction, The Religion of the Ancient Celts and Celtic Mythology. The last two have been reissued by Constable. Vissza
