"He who does not honour the past is not worthy of the present." These series on the History of Urology are addressed to all European urologists. Its aim is to make known the ideas and work of our predecessors, and to help us understand the current development of our speciality. Unfortunately, the ancient treatises written in Sanskrit, Chinese, Greek and Latin are both difficult to find and difficult to understand, and should therefore be translated into English. Even the best treatises about the history of urology are full of gaps and mistakes in the part dealing with the origin of medicine up till the 17th century. Interesting books on urology written in Dutch, Polish, Portugese and other less universal languages should be translated into English. A modern history of urology should be written by a board of urologists and philologists together. There will be a lot of work to rewrite the exact and scientific history of urology. It is our aim to publish a volume of this "História Urologiae Europaeae" every year, so that after ten years, every European urologist will have a small library on the history of urology.
