American Civilisation is the outcome of a project sponsored by the European Association for American Studies and supported by the American Council for Learned Studies. It comprises seventeen articles, most of which are by European scholars, specifically written to present European readers, whether university students or general readers, with a lively and coherent introduction to modern American civilisation. North America
Its Countries and Regions Second Edition
J. Wreford Watson
Written by the author of the opening chapter in American Civilisation, this study of the North American continent shows how man has made use of his environment to create a unique geography of settlement and development, at once impregnated with European traditions and charged with American ways and ideals.
The author describes the establishment and historical development of the various regional cultures and shows how the three great North American nations of today—Canada, Mexico and the United States—emerged.
The second edition brings all the population and production figures up to date and takes account of the important social and political changes which North America is now undergoing. It indicates new trends in resource development, rural settlement and metropolitan planning in all parts of North America to provide a complete picture of how each country has used and developed its resources to create the regional patterns that give such diversity and richness to the life of the continent.
