Preface to the Third Edition It comes as somewhat of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, to find ourselves writing a third edition of this book. Frankly, it never occurred to us that its popularity would continue over such a long period of time, particularly in view of the plethora of books recently published in the neurosciences. This third edition is in the same mold as its predecessors but with a logical extension. Two new chapters have been added in keeping with recent developments, one on receptors and the other on the exciting area of polypeptides as possible neurotransmitters. The remaining chapters have all been up-dated to accommodate new information. One constant in revisions of the text has been our aim to assess in a critical manner the various topics that are covered and to present the information in a concise yet readable form. Vissza
