To reproduce these and the endre oral tradition of Germany was the ambitious project of the Grimm brothers in the early
nineteenth century. Drawing on Jacob's scholarship and Wilhelm's literary talent, they published in 1812 Kinder- und Hausmdrchen, a collection of stories which remains to this day the most famous body of folktales in the world.
These stories which they so lovingly collected have, as wholes or in part, innumerable parallels or equivalents outside as well as inside Germany. Not only are they often variants of each ¦ other but they also contain many of the motifs found in j^B folktales all over the world, such as the animal bridegroom, the wicked stepmother or the magic purse.
