THE SERIES
The new FONTANA UNESCO pocket art series will be a complete library of world art. The illustrations will be specially photographed and the texts will be by leading authorities. Encompassing art treasures of all countries, the series ranges from the earliest primitive cave paintings to contemporary painters.

Mir^was born in Barcelona in 1893 and his development coincided with the growth of the French Surrealist movement. Three separate influences formed his painting : the landscape of his native Mont-roig in Catalonia; Majorca, where he discovered pure light and pre-historic art forms ; and Paris, where in 1919 He first met Picasso and the Surrealist poets. From these sources Miro synthesised a new, but entirely natOral language. Continually experimental, forever pursuing the unknown, Miro's work bears affinities with Klee and Picasso; but he creates a private world of his own, in which his 'Personnages' appear almost hallucinatory, taken from a world of children...
