Few school subjects have aroused such passionate discussion as EngUsh. Not only the practice of teaching itself but the effect on the personalities of the pupils and the whole context of society at large inevitably become drawn into the debate.
This book deals with all these aspects and with many more. The chapters (each specially written by an expert in its particular field) are grouped into six sections. This book deals with all these aspects and with many more. The chapters (each specially written by an expert in its particular field) are grouped into six sections. The first discusses the ways in which English teaching has changed and is changing. It takes a broad international view, embracing the contrasting beliefs and practice of teachers in Britain and America and with a chapter on interesting developments in Australia.
The second section deals with the social context. It includes a discussion on how far English teaching can be used as a means to counter social deprivation and it deals with the needs of children from poor and half-literate homes as well as with the well-endowed.
Section three considers the particular needs of fourteen- to fifteen-year-olds, and section four the new techniques available to the teacher, ranging from linguistics to the use of television. The last two sections cover poetry (with a brilliantly pithy chapter by W. H. Auden) and examinations (including a 'consumer report' from a girl who has just been through the examination mill).
In short, this book provides in-service and student teachers with an authoritative and detailed survey of the progress of a crucial subject, and with a fund of stimulating ideas that they can put into practice in their own work.
