Contains the papers presented at the First International Symposium on Nuclear Fuel Elements held at Columbia University in January 1959. This book is the first to deal exclu-sively with the nuclear fuel elements. The twenty ehapters include first-hand information from scientists in the U.S. and European countries who have worked on the development, design and fabrication of fuel elements. These scientists deseribe their own experiences. Among the individual topics presented by each chapter are discussions of the use of the fuel elements for reactors of the future, the standardization of certain types of elements, cost analysis for low-eost fabrication and reprocessing, metallic fuel elements made from uránium, thor-ium and plutónium, dispersion-type fuel elements, high-temperature fuel elements, and the behavior of fuel elements under reactor operating con-ditions.
