HISTORY OF IDEAS AND IMAGES IN ITALIAN ART
This book looks at works of art from the point of view of their subject matter. It describes Italian paindngs from that standpoint, spanning over 2500 years, beginning with the Etruscans and the Greek settlers in the first millennium BC and ending in the early nineteenth century when Italian art loses its impetus and ceases to lead European taste. Incorporated throughout the text is the theme of the survival of images from one age to the next together with the prime importance of the Patron in transmitting ideas to the artist.
In addition to its appeal for the general reader, features such as the ample notes and references, the three indexes, and an appendix on how to read Latin and Byzantine-'Greek inscriptions make it a useful tool for every student of Italian art.
