About this book
The Neolithic peoples of the Near East laid the foundations upon which the civilizations of Western Asia and Europe were built. Considerable as has been the work done in this field - notably by the author himself - there are still many gaps in our knowledge of what is a key period in the cultural development of early man. Even so, by assembling and correlating the substantial body of material available, Mr Mellaart has provided us with a lucid and coherent account of this period.
His territory extends from the Balkans to Central Asia, while the time-span covered totals some ten thousand years. Faced with the task of integrating this vast body of archaeological evidence, he has elected to treat it on a regional basis stressing the principal achievements of manifold cultures, making comparisons and drawing parallels. Though concentrating upon one region at a time, however, he does not obscure the over-all chronological picture of man's remarkable progress from a tribal existence to a comparatively advanced community life during Neohthic times. The text is accompanied by chronological and agricultural tables, a list of C14 dates and fourteen specially prepared maps.
James Mellaart, as well as discovering the Turkish sites of Can Hasan (1951), Beycesultan (1952), Hacilar (1956) and Catal Hiiytik (1958) while scholar of the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara, was also director of excavations at Hacilar and Catal Hiiytik. From 1959 to 1961 he was Assistant Director of the British Institute of Archaeology in Ankara and since 1964 he has been Lecturer in Anatolian Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology in the University of London.
