The Pelican Book of English Prose, in two volumes, is an anthology which traces the deveiopment of English style and sensibility, and the growth of the English language itself, from medieval times to the present day. Each volume is divided chronologically, and alsó by subject, into such generál categories as reportage, imagination and argument.
This second volume spans the period of rapid social change from Coleridge and Cobbett to Empson and Auden, between the late eighteenth century and the present day. Raymond Williams writes: In generál I have chosen extracts which, taken as a whole, seem to me to give ways of understanding the period, in its major literary and social developments. At the centre of my selection is an interest in the deveiopment of the növel, which is the outstanding prose achievement of these years.
