This could be the ominously rash utterance of any teen-ager; in SENSE AND SENSIBIL-ITY, it leads to one of Jane Austen's wittiest satires on love and the wages of pride. For Marianne, who sees herself as thoroughly reasonable and unbending, is self-deceived. An encounter with a certain unprincipled Mr. Willoughby soon reveals her as a young woman far from immune to the stings of infatuation, the desperate pangs of an unrequited love.
In contrast, Marianne's sister Elinor displays good sense and self-control when treated in a similar manner by her own pledged lover. If both girls finally achieve love and happiness, they do so in different ways—and not before Jane Austen has delighted the reader with a scathing portrayal of the middle-class society in which she lived.
