Ijrerman painting reached its highest moment in the i6th cen-tury. This was the century of Albrecht Dürer, and of the flowering of Germán panel painting. As the artists developed into individual masters they began signing their works. The i6th century is at the same time a period of transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age, and the variety of names under which it is known (Germán Renaissance, Reformation, Dürer's period, etc.) shows that this was indeed a many-splendoured and exciting period. Art histórián János Végh, an expert in Germán painting, pro-vides a descriptive introduction to many outstanding artists of this period, including Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Hans Scháufelein.
48 full-page colour plates re-produce works preserved in Hungárián collections, more than a few of which are truly master-pieces.
