Fülszöveg

" In common with most Classicists trained in the English-speaking world, my familiarity with Latin poetry has tended to be restricted to the writers of ancient Rome and, to a lesser extent, to those who might be ranked : as ^mainstream' poets of the Renaissance. ' It was quite by accident that a small selection ; of Janus Pannonius's works came into
my hands, and I recognized at once that he , was a poet of great accomplishment, who had
written in an 'international' language but ; still shared the isolation that Hungarian I culture has suffered because of the enormous barriers that her language imposes. Apart from brief selections he has never been translated into one of the more familiar I modern languages I hope that my volume i may represent another stage in the process I of enhancing the awareness of Janus outside Hungary and Croatia "
From Authony A. Barrett's Preface
