Political Writings
Edited by Frederick Watkins
Preface to the new editioyi by Patrick Riley
Frederick Watkins' 1953 edition oi' Rousseau's Political Writings has long been noted for being fully accurate while representing much of Rousseau's eloquence and elegance. It contains what is widely regarded as the finest English translation of The Social Contract, Rousseau's greatest political treatise. "One could say of Watkins what he said of Rousseau: that if he is not always right, he invariably sees what is important and refuses to oversimplify iyi the interest of a too easily bought 'unity' or 'coherence.' The traits that Watkins most admired in Rousseau were his own greatest strengths as well."
—Patrick Riley, from the preface to the new edition
"This edition has an excellent introduction. All the translations are good and the selections are well chosen. One, Constitutional Project for Corsica, IS not available in English in any other published volume. It is a useful and serious piece of work."
