Prof. KOSTROWICKI, Jerzy, was born in 1918 in Koscieniow (then Poland, now Soviet Union). Between 1936 and 1939 he pursued studies at the Warsaw Academy of Commerce. His studies were interrupted by the war. Between 1939 and 1944 he stayed in Wilno and took part in the anti-nazi resistance movement. Between 1946 and 1949 he was working in the Central Office of Physical Planning, finishing, at the same time, his studies (M. Sc. Econ.: 1947, Warsaw). In 1947 - 48 he continued post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics. From 1949 to 1954 he was scientific adviser of the State Commission for Planning (Ph. D.: 1951, University of Warsaw). Since 1953 he has been professor at the Institute of Geography of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Between 1953 and 1960 he was deputy director, since 1955 he has been leading the Department of Agricultural Geography of the Institute. Prof. Kostrowicki participates in the activity of IGU. Prof. KOSTROWICKI, Jerzy, was born in 1918 in Koscieniow (then Poland, now Soviet Union). Between 1936 and 1939 he pursued studies at the Warsaw Academy of Commerce. His studies were interrupted by the war. Between 1939 and 1944 he stayed in Wilno and took part in the anti-nazi resistance movement. Between 1946 and 1949 he was working in the Central Office of Physical Planning, finishing, at the same time, his studies (M. Sc. Econ.: 1947, Warsaw). In 1947 - 48 he continued post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics. From 1949 to 1954 he was scientific adviser of the State Commission for Planning (Ph. D.: 1951, University of Warsaw). Since 1953 he has been professor at the Institute of Geography of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Between 1953 and 1960 he was deputy director, since 1955 he has been leading the Department of Agricultural Geography of the Institute. Prof. Kostrowicki participates in the activity of IGU. Since 1964 he has been president of the IGU Commission on Agricultural Typology and he is also member of several other international scientific bodies. He has been twice visiting professor at universities in the U.S.A. and visited the Pacific Islands, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, etc. He has published nearly 200 scientific publications, including such works as Poland's Geographical Environment (in Polish), Agricultural Typology, Types of Agriculture in Poland, etc. He is honorary chairman of the editorial board of the "Geography of World Agriculture". Dr. SZCZESNY, Roman, was born in 1929 in Kurytôwka (Poland). He pursued his university studies between 1949 and 1954 in Cracow and Warsaw. Between 1953 and 1959 he was first assistant and then senior assistant at the Institute of Geography of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the years 1959 - 63 he continued post-graduate studies and won his degree of Ph. D. in 1963. Since 1963 he has been research fellow at the above-mentioned Institute.
