Philip Larkin was born in Coventry in 1922 and was educated at King Henry VIII School, Coventry, and St John's College, Oxford, of which he is now an Honorary Fellow. He has held posts in different libraries since 1943 and is at present Librarian of the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull.
