It has been said that you can understand a people only after you know their poets, their arfists and their musicians.
Jim Morrison was all three: poet, artist, musician. As such, he can be seen as a rare guide to the labyrinth that was America in the 1960s. He expressed not only the passion and excitement of that era but also its ambiguities, its turmoil, its excess and certainly its beauty.
The American Night is the second volume of Morrison's poetry and writings to be posthumously published by Viking, and it completes the endeavour - on the port of Columbus B. and Pearl Courson and Frank and Katherine Lisciandro - begun with the publication of Wî/c/emess In 1988. The aim has been to release all of the author's wriHngs in their best and most finished forni.

Perhaps even more revealing and more mature than the works contained in Wilderness, Pie American Night is bold and unconventional, and startling proof that Jim Morrison was an artist, not just of the sixties but of all ages.
