"A new, fascinating, scholarly, and controversial account of the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley. Although, as an FSM participant myself, I found myself arguing with many of her conclusions, in the end her brilliant and documented con- ^ tention that the Free Speech Movement was not a battle for civil rights as much as a skirmish in the Cold War won me over and gave me much food for thought."

"Jo Freeman is one of our finest analysts of political and social movements. In this vivid memoir, she reminds us of a time when people of all ages in Berkeley imagined a different fiiture, one that embodied social and economic justice and an absence of war. Both memoir and history, this book offers a new perspective on the Free Speech Movement and other student protests at Berkeley during the early 1960s. Jo Freeman was a key participant in the growth of social activism at the University of California. The story is told with the "you are there" immediacy of Freeman the undergraduate, but is placed into historical and political context by Freeman the scholar forty years later. It draws heavily on documents created at the time—letters, reports, interviews, memos, newspaper stories, FBI files—but is fleshed out with retrospective analysis. As events unfold, the campus conflicts of the sixties take on a completely different cast, one that may surprise many readers.
JO FREEMAN has published extensively about feminism, women and politics, social movements, and pohti-cal parties in scholarly journals, popular magazines, and anthologies. Among her books are Waves of Protest and Social Movements of the Sixties and Seventies.
