Van Diemens Land was the site for one of the strangest and most macabre settlements ever established in the name of English justice. Correspondents to the Van Diemens Land newspapers vividly described the hurlyburly life of the colony. Gaping crowds thronged to watch a man hanged, his back still raw from a recent flogging. Hated Governors were booed when at last they left for the 'Home Country'. Children were savagely murdered or died of fever caused by the stinking water of Hobart Town. Vissza
