May a politician be sold to the public like soap powder or a can
of beer? ^^
Joe McGinniss, a 26-year-old Philadelphia journalist, knows the answer.
He was in there with the teann of PR men and television specialists who pushed Richard Nixon through the presidential election, and he tells exactly how It was done.
He listened to their shrewd assessments of the unpackaged man and watched them converting him from what he was to what he ought to be; and he has written—to quote Alistair Cooke—'a short and terrifying account of what happens to a Presidential candidate in an age which regards the advertising man as an Important and natural ally of the politician.'
It was on the American bestselling lists within days of publication, topping Theodore White's The Making of the President.
American and British press reactions can be found on the back flap.
On the back of the jacket are some samples from The Selling of the President.
Jacket design by Richard Inglis

What the Press had to say about
The Selling of the President
'Possibly the most irreverent book, ever written about a president while he is still occupying the White House. It will enrage iVir Nixon, bring cackles of delight from his opposition and set serious minds fretting about the way an American politician now has to be packaged and glamourised if he is to have any hope of reaching high office.' The Sunday Telegraph
'Mr Nixon's bearers talked to him with the candor possible only to persons who have no idea how disgusting they are, i.e., successful Americans. He has brought us back the only prize that could compensate for the horror of their society—a masterpiece. Persons who have read Suetonius will now read McGinniss and understand that, beside Mr Nixon's staff, the court of Caligula was Monte Cassino.' Murray Kempton
'His book is a 60-second commercial compared to Theodore White's 90-minute special on the same subject, yet far more entertaining. As Marshal] McLuhan has said, the commercials these days are always better than the programsS-i in between.'
The New York Times Book Review
'This book is simply the most meaningful writing done on the 1968 Presidential election.' Jimmy Breslin

"Let's face it, a lot of people think Nixon is dull. Think he's a bore, a pain in the ass. They look at him as the kind of kid who always carried a bookbag. Who was forty-two years old the day he wa^ born. They'figure other kids got footbe^ls for Christmas, Nixon got a briefcase and he loved it. He'd always have his homework done and he'd never let you copy.
"Now you put him on the television, you've got a problem right away. He's a funny-looking guy. He looks like somebody hung him in a closet overnight and he jumps out in the morning with his suit all bunched up and starts running around saying, 'I want to be President.' I mean this is how he strikes some people. That's why these shows are important. To make them forget all that."
"What a heartbreak," the man who had made the films said, standing in the back of the theater.
"It looks like you're looking through a Coke bottle," Garment said.
"And he comes across as such an utter bore," Treleaven said. "I don't think the man has had an original observation in his life."
"He is rather nondynamic," Garment said.
Frank Shakespeare was up now and pacing the back of the theater. "We can't use any of this," he said. "That picture quality is awful. Just awful. And Agnew himself, my God. He says all the wrong things."
"What we need is a shade less truth and a little more pragmatism," Treleaven said.
"I think Dexedrine is the answer," Ga said.
