The illustration is taken from the 17th century book, "Respirationis Swammer-dammianae Exspiratio" by Joannis de Raei and Joh. Baptista á Lamzweerde, Amsterdam (1674) as an example of the unusual artistry of scientific presentations in the Baroque style. The artist is the Dutch painter Cornelius Decker. At first glancé it might appear to depict gravity, holding men and stones to the rounded sur-face of the earth. But the authors did not think in these terms. They were true disciples of Descartes. Ali power, they say, comes from the ether, the little par-ticles of which strike the center of our uni-verse from all sides and press solid bodies to the earth. The first balloon ascension occurred too late to disabuse the authors of their interesting theory.
