One of Shaw's great middle-period plays, John Bull's Other Island was written at the request of W. B. Yeats and first performed to packed houses at the Royal Court in 1904. It is
said that King Edward VII laughed so much he broke the chair he was sitting on, while the young Rupert Brooke found the play 'unspeakably delightful'.
Through the figures of Broadbent, a bullish land speculator;
Larry Doyle, an Irish intellectual living in London; and Keegan, a defrocked priest, the play brilliantly satirizes the national characters of Ireland and England. Shaw was a firm believer in Home Rule for Ireland. He probes English and Irish spiritual identities too, in search for 'a country to live in where the facts were not brutal and the dreams not unreal'.
