SOTHEBY'S
Art at Auction 1987-88
Edited by Sally Liddell
Sotheby's salerooms worldwide have commanded great interest this season. Arl at Auction reviews the sales and events that have contributed to this success.
Van Gogh's Irises, painted in 1889 and sold in November in New York, stole the limelight by fetching a record $53.9 million (L30.1 million); the sale is reviewed here by Ronald Pickvance. Numerous major specialised collections passed through the salerooms, including the spectacular antiquities and medieval and Renaissance works of art assembled at the turn ofthe century by Martine, Comtesse de Béhague, and sold this season in Monaco. The collection as a whole is examined by Richard Camber.

In the spring, the unique collection of the late Andy Warhol was auctioned in New York, the proceeds benefiting the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The collection involved virtually every collecting area and was extraordinary for its diversity and quality. Arl at Auction provides an invaluable insight into Warhol the collector.
House sales were a prominent and popular feature ofthe season at Sotheby's. Crowds gathered to bid for the assembled contents or to catch a glimpse ofthe interiors of Tyninghame, the former seat ofthe Earls of Haddington, and Wilsford, the former home ofthe Tennant family. Both are reviewed by Sotheby's experts, along with the contents of the Château de La Roche-Guyon.
A number of other highlights are discussed including the documentary Vincennes 'inventaire' researched by Antoine d'Albis, of the Sevres Museum, Paris; the sale of a Picasso to the nation and a set often works by Georgia O'Keelfe sold in New York.
The 464 pages oiArt at Auction 1987 -88, illustrated throughout in colour, provide a lavish and informative visual record ofthe most interesting, valuable and sometimes previously unknown works of art to have passed through the salerooms this season. Vissza
