John Dos Passos' trilogy U.S.A. is "a cornerstone in modern American fiction." It has now been made available in three paper-bound volumes by Washington Square Press, Inc. Each of the three volumes—The 42nd Parallel, 1919 and The Big Money—is a complete and separate novel and each contains many illustrations by Reginald Marsh and an Introduction by Maxwell Geismar.
This second novel in John Dos Passos' brilliant trilogy is the story of the United States at the end of World War I, that time of boom and bust which began what is now known as the Jazz Age. Through the experiences of five young Americans and through the techniques of the Newsreel, the Camera Eye and the Biographies, which the author employs to sharpen his social history, 1919 summarizes better than any other modern novel that decade of social anarchy, of pleasure seeking and private gain, of material success and trivial moral values.
