It is difficult fór young people to know what recent novels are worth reading bút this collection of extracts from fourteen contemporary novels should help. It is intended fór use in technical colleges and the upper forms of secondary schools, and fór overseas students of the modem English növel. There is a generál introduction which puts the authors intő their contemporary setting, while an introduction to each extract discusses the totál work of each author and the characteristics of his style. The extracts themselves start with Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene and rangé through such writers as Kingsley Amis, John Wain, Angus Wilson, Iris Murdoch and William Goldipg. Though the purpose of the collection is that of enjoyment and the encouragement of further reading, the extracts may be used to stimulate discussion about different styles and contrasting approaches, or to lead students to try their own hand at writing fiction.
