After a spell as a ladies' hairdresser and merchant seaman he lived in the West Indies for three years, then setded in Norfolk where he has run a tackle shop in Norwich for the last twenty years.
His books for Boxtree include the best-selling Go Fishing, Wilson's Angle and the new coarse fishing series for the Angling Times Library: Catch Carp, Catch Pike, Catch Chub and Catch Tench with John Wilson. He is also a regular contributor to many angling magazines.
