JOHN WYNDHAM has tried many kinds of work, including teaching, farming, the law and advertising, bút he is well known as a writer of "science fiction"-the name given to stories combining the description of recent or possible discoveries in Science with imaginary events, in the manner of Jules Verne and H. G. Wells. Such stories are often set in the future, and Mr Wyndham is interested in the problems of time-will people ever be able to travel through time, and what would happen if someone from the future arrived in the present ? One of his best known stories was The Day of The Triffids, in which people are blinded by lights flashing from the sky, so that they are unable to control a new kind of plánt that has been invented, the Triffid. The triffids are able to take over control of the world from mén, and only a few mén-those who by chance can still see-survive.
