Almayer's Folly
Conrad's first novel, set in Malaya, dramatizes the clash between East and West and introduces many of the themes developed in his later works.
Almayer, ruined and despairing after twenty years in the East, dreams of escape with his beautiful half-caste daughter Nina. But Nina rejects her father and chooses Dain, her Malay lover - and Almayer's thin, desperate hopes crash down around him.
As Jocelyn Baines wrote in his biography of Conrad, 'Although Almayer's Folly shows signs of being the work of a novice it is certainly not that of an amateur, and its technical accomplishment clearly disproves Conrad's contention that "the conception of a planned book was entirely outside my mental range when I sat down to write".'
