"Justine" and "The Story of O": two classics of forbidden literature adapted by the acknowledged master of erotic comic strips. This eloquent conjunction proves once again that, thanks to the inimitable style of Guido Crepax, the genre has truly come of age.

Literary adaptations occupy a privileged position in the works of Guido Crepax, the uncontested master of the erotic cartoon strip and an important renovator of the medium. In the Marquis de Sade's celebrated "Dustine", so often a subject of controversy, and the best-seller "The Story of O" by Dominique Aury (alias Pauline Réage), Crepax chose two of the most scandalous and, in their own way, most striking works of the erotic canon. The trajectory of the persecuted innocent in "Dustine" and the story of the submissive slave "O" might lead the reader to expect something radical. But Crepax feels no requirement to exhibit scenes of extremity. The detail of a body or a hand and the expression of a face are sufficient in themselves to create erotic tension, while a skilful change of viewpoint is enough to transform the atmosphere, allowing Crepax to take a new perspective and distance himself from his literary models. Amid wild bodily excess, eroticism remains, for him, a cerebral matter. The masterful composition, abundance of metaphors and virtuosity of draughtsmanship -the latter manifest in his love of detail and the exuberance of his decors - give Crepax's work (the words that he transmutes into imagery) a highly significant place in the history of the erotic comic-strip.
