He MM This book addresses the position, and more specifically, the economic conditions of intellectuals in Hungary in the second half of this century, especially during the Kádár era J/J Hungary anc| the early years of economic transition. The author examines changes in the economic conditions of the intelligentsia set against the social-political climate of the times, with an emphasis on their position as compared to other strata of society. Special attention is devoted to individual groups of intellectuals including managers, engineers, teachers and physicians focussing on their selection, education and income levels. The particular problems of young people just beginning their careers are alsó treated extensively. Although this book is largely based on statistical data and analyses, it accurately depicts the climate of the period. Readership: economists, sociologist-particulary those interested in Eastern Europe.
