Scent Bottles traces the history of these charming objects from the 6th century b.c. to the early 19th century.
It is to Egypt, approximately three thousand years ago, that we must look for evidence of the first scent bottles. They are depicted in wall-paintings, and many bottles, most of them made of ' glass, have been found in tombs.
" From Egypt the fashion for scent and its containers spread to Greece and the Román Empire, and by the sixteenth century it was a flourishing trade all over Europe.
Undoubtedly the eighteenth century was the most fruitful period in the history of the scent bottle. Innumerable bottles were made in porcelain, enamel, copper, glass, mother-of-pearl, gold and silver, or combinations of these materials. However, it is the names connected with the actual scent, rather than the names of the craftsmen responsible for their design and manufacture, that survive for the most part today. Scent bottles vary in shape as they do in their place of manufacture. There was hardly a porcelain factory that did not produce them, nor a goldsmith or silversmith, who did not try his hand at this art. Vissza
