1 The Bosen Teahouse Garden
This garden was designed to suggest a
view from the window of a tomabune, a
rush-thatched houseboat. Although it is not
visible in the photograph, there is a fence
symbolizing the water line of a lake. In
the garden, a "dew-gathering" stone water
basin (fig. 1) is set tastefully and naturally
in a wide bed covered with a thin layer of
water. The basin's bulge-bottom conveys an
impression of serenity and stability.
Usually, stone lanterns stand close to
basins they accompany, but here the lantern
has been set a slight distance away. The
reason is probably that the lantern is too
short for the basin. By widening the angle
of sight between the two, as shown in
figure 2, the disparity is effectively covered.
The stone lantern is actually a yosetoro,
"summoning" lantern, but it is used here
as a basin-attending lantern. That use gives
it a subdued aspect which appeals strongly
to the Japanese spirit and matches well the
garden's mood.
