Rarely does a man's reputation blossom in the years . immediately following his death. This has happened fin the case of the subject of this book. George Bell, Bishop of Chichester, has increasingly been seen as one of the most significant Christian figures of the twentieth century.
Kenneth Slack's short but concentrated study centres on the world churchman, one of the most creative personalities of the ecumenical movement. This movement is not seen narrowly in terms of the World Council of Churches (in which Bell was one of the chief figures), but as expressing concern that the Christian church should be a truly international society. The author therefore treats Bell as the friend of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the trusted adviser of the Confessing Church in Germany, and the resolute opponent of Britain's bombing pohcy.
