It was once the wild frontier, the place where Daniel Boone hacked a trail through the Cumberland Gap and opened the territory west of the Alleghenies for settlement.
There are still places in Kentucky that would feel like home to the men and women who began going west before the first shot was fired in the American Revolution, but the popular notion is that Kentucky is a place of endless fields of bluegrass with frisky colts sniffing the morning air behind neat rows of white fences.
