Foreword Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, is a different world, one which floods its visitors with unforgettable memories. Its charm lies in the nature of its landscape and in its indissoluble bonds with its historical past: there is not an inch of land on this island which does not bear somé trace of the presence of man since befő re the beginning of recorded history. There are prehistoric towns, the superbly delicate Minoan palaces, Román ruins, Byzantine churches, Venetian castles and Turkish minarets, but alsó concrete pillboxes left over from the Second World War - constant reminders of how stormy life was in Crete in the past, and even in the present.
